At Bergmancenter we have both temporary and permanent exhibitions about Ingmar Bergman's work with film, theater and other media. Here, visitors can learn more about one of the world's most significant filmmakers, whose career spanned 65 years and more than 500 works. Take the chance to find out more about the strong relationship that developed between the world-famous director and Fårö
The exhibition takes you as a visitor straight into the strong relationship that arose between the world-famous director and Fårö's peculiar landscape - and its inhabitants. It all started in 1960 when Ingmar Bergman visited Fårö for the first time to find a recording location for Såsom i en spegel. Bergman himself describes it as love at first sight.
In Bergmancenter's new base exhibition Play, lust and light! Ingmar Bergman and Fårö it is Ingmar Bergman who has the say and moves the story forward. It is about the beloved place on earth that became his home, Fårö, about the films he shot on the island, about favorite actors and about the most important creative elements of his filmmaking. This is where some of the most iconic films were made - chief among them Persona. The filming on Fårö and Gotland involved many people – both as craftsmen and extras – and many of them will be featured in the exhibition. With objects, film, and still images and not least Bergman's own story, the story of Ingmar Bergman, the films and Fårö is shaped. Play, lust and light! will be inaugurated at Bergmancenter in Fårö on Sunday 6 June.
Every year, during the last week of June, Fårö and the Bergman Center are filled with film lovers, Bergman enthusiasts, and Fårö fans. They come to the island to participate in Bergman Week, which for the past 20 years has hosted guests such as Greta Gerwig, Yorgos Lanthimos, Ang Lee, and Willem Dafoe. This year, the festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and we want to commemorate it with an exhibition showcasing a cavalcade of all the guests and program highlights that have graced Bergman Week over the years. The exhibition opens on June 1st.
